# Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up on Google Maps — and How to Fix It

## Answer summary

The five reasons Irish trades disappear from the Google Maps map pack — and the fixes that actually work. Most can be done in an afternoon. The five reasons Irish trades disappear from the Google Maps map pack — and the fixes that actually work. Most can be done in an afternoon. Practical guidance

## Why this matters

The Google Maps "map pack" drives roughly 70% of all phone calls to local trades. If you're not in those three, you're fighting for scraps.

## The five reasons

Single biggest cause. Check yours has a verified address, 15+ photos, every service listed individually, hours of operation, and posts published in the last 30 days. Full setup guide. 15+ reviews with a 4.5+ average gets you in the conversation; 50+ with regular new ones dominates. Get a short Google review link, save it to your home screen, text it to every happy customer the same day. In GBP, choose the most specific primary category available. Add secondaries for adjacent services. Build an "Areas We Serve" page that lists every county. Build individual service-area pages for your top three towns. Duplicate GBPs split your authority. One-star reviews you haven't responded to look unprofessional. Search your business name + town; claim and merge duplicates; respond to every review.

## The 7-day fix

Expect measurable map-pack movement within 21 days.

- Day 1: Complete every GBP field. Upload 15 photos.
- Day 2: List every service individually.
- Day 3: Text 10 happy customers a review request.
- Day 4: Add an "Areas We Serve" page.
- Day 5: Build one service-area page.
- Day 6: Respond to every existing review.
- Day 7: Post your first weekly update.

## How Google actually decides the map pack

Google ranks local results on three factors, and only one of them is about your website: Distance is the one people fight and lose. If you are based in Gorey, you will not out-rank a Wexford town plumber for someone standing in Wexford town, no matter how good your site is. What you can do is win everything inside your own radius and then build genuine town pages for the places you actually travel to.

- Relevance — how well your profile categories and services match what was typed.
- Distance — how far your verified address or service area is from the searcher.
- Prominence — reviews, mentions of your business elsewhere online, and your website's own authority.

## Storefront or service-area business — pick correctly

This single setting decides whether your address shows publicly. Get it wrong and you either look like you are hiding, or you get filtered out. Listing forty areas you never travel to dilutes relevance. We have seen profiles improve simply by cutting the service-area list back to the truthful radius.

- If customers come to you (workshop, salon, showroom), keep the address visible.
- If you go to customers (plumber, electrician, mobile mechanic), hide the address and set service areas instead. Google allows up to twenty; list the towns you genuinely serve, not the whole country.

## The competitor with the keyword-stuffed name

You have seen it: "Emergency Plumber Dublin 24 Hour Heating". That is against Google's guidelines, and it works until somebody reports it. Use the "Suggest an edit" option on their profile to correct the name to the legal trading name. Corrections are frequently accepted, and the ranking advantage disappears with them. This is legitimate — you are reporting a guideline breach, not attacking a competitor.

## Review velocity beats review count

Fifty reviews collected three years ago read as a business that used to be busy. Six reviews in the last two months read as a business people are using right now, and Google treats recency as a signal. A steady two or three reviews a month indefinitely will out-perform a one-off push of twenty. Ask at the moment the customer is happiest — job finished, invoice not yet sent — and send the short link by text while you are still in the driveway.

## Read your own data before you change anything

Inside your profile, the performance panel tells you how people found you (direct name searches versus discovery searches) and what they did next (calls, direction requests, website clicks). If almost all your views are direct searches for your business name, you are not being discovered by new customers at all — that is a relevance and category problem, not a website problem.

## Mistakes we see most often in Ireland

- An Eircode entered in the wrong field, so the pin lands in the wrong townland.
- Two profiles for the same business, one from an old van sign-writing directory listing.
- Hours never updated for bank holidays, which quietly generates one-star reviews.
- Photos uploaded once at setup and never again.
- No response to a single review, good or bad.

## How long does it take to get into the Google map pack?

For a profile that is genuinely incomplete, we typically see the first movement inside three weeks of finishing it properly and getting reviews flowing again. Getting into the top three in a competitive town takes longer — three to six months — because prominence builds slowly. Anyone promising the map pack in seven days is selling you something.

## Why do I show up at home but not in the next town?

Because you are being ranked by distance from the searcher. That is normal and it is not a fault. The fix is not a setting; it is genuine service-area pages for the towns you travel to, plus reviews from customers in those towns, which is the strongest signal that you actually work there.

## Does having no physical address hurt me?

No, as long as you set yourself up as a service-area business rather than leaving the address field half-filled. Service-area businesses rank perfectly well. What hurts is an unverified or inconsistent address, or one that does not match what appears on your website and invoices.

## Should I reply to bad reviews?

Always, within a day or two, briefly and without arguing. Acknowledge, state what you did or offer to sort it offline, and stop. Future customers read the reply more closely than the complaint — a calm response to an unfair review often wins work rather than losing it.

## Can I rank in a town I do not have an address in?

In the map pack, only rarely and only if you are close by. In the normal organic results below the map, absolutely — a real page about the work you do in that town, with local detail and examples, ranks on its own merits. That is where most of the winnable traffic sits for trades.

## FAQ

### How much does an AI integration project cost in Ireland?

Digital Bridge scopes AI integration after reviewing the workflow, systems, data, governance and operating responsibility involved. A tailored written proposal is provided after discovery rather than a standard published figure.

### How long does a production AI build take?

A feasibility assessment runs three to five weeks. A baseline production build typically runs eight to twelve weeks from signed scope to go-live, including a seven-day shadow-mode pilot before the system takes live traffic. Multi-system programmes are sequenced into phases so value lands before the full programme completes.

### Can Irish grant funding cover this work?

Often, yes. Enterprise Ireland's Digital Discovery Grant funds up to 80% of an eligible feasibility assessment, and Digital Process Innovation funds up to 50% of eligible implementation costs. Local Enterprise Office schemes cover smaller digital projects. Eligibility is decided by the funder, never by us.

### Who owns the code and the prompts?

You do. Every engagement transfers full source-code and prompt ownership on final payment. Systems run on EU-hosted infrastructure with provider training disabled and a signed data processing agreement. There is no vendor lock-in and no proprietary runtime you have to keep paying us for.
