Google Business Profile Setup for Irish Businesses: Step-by-Step
A 30-minute setup that does more for Irish local search than any a fixed quote website. Step-by-step, written for non-technical owners.
Why Google Business Profile beats almost everything
A 100%-completed GBP outperforms a half-finished one with five times the website budget. It's free. It takes 30 minutes. It drives the map pack.
Before you start
You need: a Google account (business email if possible), NAP exactly as you want them shown, 15 photos, a 2–3 sentence description.
Step 1 — Claim or create
Go to google.com/business. Claim an existing placeholder or create a new profile.
Step 2 — Verify
Google sends a postcard with a 5-digit code to your address (5–7 days). Some categories allow video verification.
Step 3 — Fill every field
- Primary category: the most specific one available.
- Secondary categories: up to 9 more.
- Services: every individual service as a separate entry.
- Service areas: every town and county you cover.
- Hours: include holiday hours.
- Payment methods, languages, accessibility: all of it.
Step 4 — Upload photos
15 to start, plus 1–2 a week forever. Exterior, interior, team, before/after, equipment. Real photos only.
Step 5 — Write your description
250 characters max. Lead with what you do, where, and what makes you different. Example: "Family-run emergency plumber serving Wexford, Gorey and surrounding villages. Same-day callouts, transparent fixed pricing."
Step 6 — Get reviews flowing
In GBP, click "Share review form" and copy the short link. Save it to your phone. Text every customer the same day. Target: 15 reviews in 60 days.
Step 7 — Post weekly
A finished-job photo. A seasonal reminder. A new service or area.
90 days later
Complete profile, 15+ reviews, weekly posts → map pack for most relevant searches. If you're still not showing, the cause is almost always your website. That's the next article.
Verification problems specific to Ireland
Verification is where most Irish setups stall, and the causes are predictable:
- Rural addresses without a street number. Use the Eircode. Enter it in the postcode field, not on the street line, then drag the map pin to the actual entrance rather than trusting the automatic placement.
- The postcard never arrives. Common for townland addresses. Request a second one after fourteen days, and do not edit the business name or address while a card is in transit — an edit cancels the verification.
- Video verification. Increasingly the default for trades. You record one continuous clip showing your location or signage, your tools or stock, and then proof you manage the business, usually a utility bill or headed invoice. Plan the walk before you press record; you cannot pause.
- Home-based businesses. Verify at your home address and then hide it, setting service areas instead. Your address is used for verification and distance, not display.
Services and products are two different fields
Most profiles fill in neither. Services should list each job you do as a separate line — "boiler replacement", "power flushing", "emergency leak repair" — because those entries are matched against what people type. Products can be used loosely by service businesses for named packages with an indicative price, and they display as cards on your profile, which pushes competitors further down the screen.
Turn messaging on only if you will answer it
Profile messaging puts a chat button on your listing. Google tracks response time and will discourage the feature if you ignore it. If nobody is watching the app during the day, leave it off — a slow reply is worse than no button.
Track what the profile actually sends you
Add tracking parameters to the website link on your profile so the visits appear separately in your analytics rather than being lumped in with general Google traffic. Then you can see honestly whether the profile is producing enquiries or just impressions.
If your profile gets suspended
It happens, usually after an address change, a name change or a service-area edit. Do not create a second profile — that makes it worse. Use the reinstatement form, supply the same evidence as video verification (signage, utility bill, insurance certificate, headed invoice), and expect a wait of one to three weeks. Keep every edit truthful and matching your website exactly; the mismatch is almost always what triggered it.
A realistic maintenance rhythm
That is around fifteen minutes a week, and in our experience it out-performs the first few hundred euro of paid advertising for a local trade.
- Weekly: one post — a finished job, a seasonal reminder, an availability note.
- Weekly: one or two photos from real work.
- Every job: the review link by text, same day.
- Monthly: check hours, check the performance panel, respond to anything unanswered.
- Seasonally: update the description and add any new service.
How long does Google Business Profile verification take in Ireland?
Postcard verification is usually five to seven working days, longer for rural townland addresses. Video verification is often reviewed within a few days. If nothing arrives after two weeks, request verification again rather than editing the profile, because edits restart the process.
Should I hide my home address?
Yes, if you travel to customers. Verify at home, then switch the profile to a service-area business so the address is used for verification and distance but never displayed. Customers see the towns you cover instead, which is what they were searching for anyway.
How many photos does a profile need?
Fifteen to start and one or two a week after that. Photos of real jobs, your van, your team and your premises. Uploading a batch once and never returning is the pattern on most stalled profiles, and freshness is part of what keeps a listing competitive.
Can somebody else claim my business on Google?
An unclaimed listing can be claimed by anyone who verifies it, which occasionally happens through directory resellers. Search your business name and town now; if a listing exists that you do not control, request ownership through Google's process and supply proof of trading.
Is the profile more important than my website?
For a local trade in the first six months, usually yes — it is free, it feeds the map pack, and it drives phone calls directly. Longer term you need both: the profile gets you shown, and the website is what convinces the person who taps through, and what AI search tools read when deciding whether to recommend you.
