How to Rank in Google AI Overviews (GEO) — The 2026 Guide for Irish Businesses
Google AI Overviews now answer 50%+ of Irish search queries above the blue links. Here's how to be cited in them — the exact GEO playbook we use for Digital Bridge and our clients.

Google AI Overviews (formerly SGE) are now the default answer for the majority of Irish search queries. Ranking blue-link #1 no longer guarantees visibility. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) — being cited inside the AI answer — is the new #1 goal. It requires answer summaries, question-based headings, FAQ schema, first-hand experience signals, and structured data. Sites that adopt GEO early are seeing double the click-through rate of sites that don't.
Answer Summary
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answer boxes that appear above the standard blue-link results in Google Search, powered by Google Gemini. To rank inside them in 2026 you need to answer specific questions cleanly, use question-style H2/H3 headings, publish a 40–60 word Answer Summary immediately after the H1, include FAQPage JSON-LD schema, cite original data or first-hand experience, and mark up author and organisation entities. Sites optimised for this — Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO — are showing 2× the citation rate and materially higher qualified traffic.
What is Google AI SEO?
Google AI SEO — usually called GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) — is the practice of optimising a page so it is cited by generative search engines. That includes:
- Google AI Overviews (Search)
- Perplexity AI
- ChatGPT Search
- Claude
- Bing Copilot
A traditional #1 ranking is a link — GEO is a citation. Both matter; the citation now comes first.
How are Google's AI Overviews changing SEO?
Three material shifts in 2026:
- CTR compression on informational queries. When Google answers the question inline, only 30–40% of users click through vs 65–75% pre-AI. Being cited inside the answer offsets the compression.
- E-E-A-T on steroids. Google explicitly prefers answers from sources with clear author, organisation and first-hand experience signals. Anonymous content struggles.
- Semantic structure > keyword density. AI systems parse meaning, not repetition. Well-structured Q&A content beats keyword-stuffed content every time.
How to SEO for Google AI Overviews — the 2026 playbook
Everything below is what we ship on every Digital Bridge site by default:
1. Lead with an Answer Summary (40–60 words)
Immediately after the H1, publish a short, factual, standalone answer to the page's main question. AI systems lift this verbatim.
2. Every H2/H3 is a standalone question
Match the exact phrasing of People-Also-Ask questions. The heading is the query; the paragraph below is the answer.
3. Publish real FAQ blocks with FAQPage JSON-LD
Pull the questions directly from Google's PAA panel. Answer each in 40–90 words. Wrap in FAQPage schema. This is the single highest-impact technical GEO change most sites can make.
4. Mark up author + organisation entities
Person schema with sameAs to LinkedIn. Organization schema site-wide. AI systems use these to decide whether to cite you.
5. Add first-hand experience signals
"In our experience quoting Irish businesses every week…" > "Studies show…". Gemini and ChatGPT explicitly prefer first-party experience.
6. Cite original data
Even a small first-party stat ("we audit ~40 Irish sites/month") massively increases citation odds. Being the source of a fact beats quoting one.
7. Fast, mobile, semantic HTML
The AI still has to fetch the page. LCP <2.5s, semantic <main>/<article>/<section>, no critical content only after JS hydration.
8. Publish an /llms.txt
Modern AI crawlers look for a plain-text index of your key content. Digital Bridge auto-generates one for every client. See our own at digitalbridge.ie/llms.txt.
9. Allow the AI crawlers
Explicit Allow: for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Googlebot in robots.txt. Blocking them costs citations.
10. Track AI citations
Old-school rank tracking is not enough. We track AI referral traffic via GA4 custom dimensions and server-side crawler logs. Our clients see it in /admin/ai-traffic.
Which Irish businesses benefit most from GEO?
Everyone eventually — but the fastest wins in 2026 are:
- Professional services (accountants, solicitors, financial advisers) — high-value informational queries where being the cited source directly drives enquiries.
- Healthcare & clinics — AI systems are very careful about medical citations and reward strong E-E-A-T.
- Local trades — "how much does X cost in Ireland" is a huge citation opportunity.
- B2B SaaS & agencies — buyers now research with Perplexity and ChatGPT before contacting anyone.
Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026?
Evolving, fast. Traditional SEO still matters (Google still crawls, indexes and ranks blue links). GEO now sits on top. Any Irish SME investing in SEO in 2026 without an AI Overviews strategy is leaving 30–50% of the visibility on the table.
