Google AI Mode: Can It Read Your Business Website?
Quick answer: Google AI Mode can use supporting links from pages that are indexed and eligible to show a Search snippet. Google says no extra AI-specific schema or new text file is required. Digital Bridge in Gorey, Co. Wexford checks crawl access, clear page content and internal links for Irish businesses.
Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.
At a glance: The eligibility funnel
Five checks narrow in order: Googlebot can reach the page, it can be indexed, it answers a real question, internal links and canonicals support it, and it is eligible as a supporting link. Source: Digital Bridge, 21 October 2026. Check Question to ask ------ Reach Does the page return a successful response to Googlebot? Index Any accidental noindex or restrictive snippet setting? What does Google actually require for AI Mode links?
Google Search Central states that pages used as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Search. That is a technical eligibility condition, not a promise that a particular answer will cite your page. Google also says there are no additional technical requirements for these AI features. Begin with ordinary Search foundations. A business does not need to invent a new schema type or buy a special file in order to qualify for a supporting link.
Can Googlebot reach the important page?
Check the complete request path, including the website host, security rules and any proxy or content delivery service. A robots.txt allowance is not useful if another layer blocks Googlebot or returns an empty response. Confirm the final URL and the content received rather than relying only on the page you see while signed in. Googlebot is the crawler relevant to Google Search. Google-Extended controls some other uses and should not be treated as an interchangeable switch for Search crawling. Apply the published guidance to the system you are actually assessing.
- Confirm the page returns the appropriate successful response.
- Check robots.txt and page-level indexing controls.
- Look for accidental noindex or restrictive snippet settings.
- Confirm redirects lead to the intended final address.
- Inspect the rendered or statically generated text Google can access.
Does the page answer a real customer question?
Make the main answer available as text, not only inside an image or an animation. Name the service, what it does, its intended audience and the next step. A page about AI workflow automation should explain the workflow rather than listing every AI-related search phrase. Use real work and sourceable claims where available. Keep company facts consistent across the contact page, service descriptions and structured information. If a claim cannot be supported, remove it or ask the business owner for evidence instead of turning it into a statistic.
Are internal links and canonicals helping the right page?
An isolated page is harder for visitors and crawlers to find. Link from the relevant hub and use descriptive anchors that explain the destination. Consolidate overlapping topics deliberately rather than creating another almost-identical page for a new spelling of the same search. Check that the canonical identifies the intended indexable address. A redirect, an old service alias or a duplicate page should not be presented as the preferred version. This matters particularly after a cleanup or migration, when old links may remain in menus, articles or generated files.
Do schema, FAQs and Markdown change eligibility?
Structured data should describe the content visible to readers. If a page shows FAQs, the questions and answers in FAQ markup should match them. That accuracy does not guarantee a rich result; Google limits FAQ rich results largely to authoritative government and health sites. Markdown mirrors and llms.txt may offer a convenient additional reading format for systems that choose to use them. Google explicitly says a new AI text file is not required for its Search AI features. Keep optional mirrors synchronized, but do not present them as a substitute for crawlable HTML or a ranking shortcut. In our published search approach, the practical sequence is access, useful content, truthful markup and a working conversion path. This is a checklist of work to verify, not evidence of a promised citation rate or a client ranking gain.
How can you measure progress honestly?
Use Search Console to check page indexing and the queries and pages reported in Search performance. Google says activity from its AI features is included in the Web search reporting. Do not call a change in total impressions proof of a specific AI Mode citation. For a manual answer check, record the date, question, market and supporting links. Results may change between searches. A single answer that mentions the business is evidence of that observation, not a stable share of all AI answers. Compare useful enquiries and completed actions alongside visibility.
